Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of a video and roleplay-based approach in improving students' learning in a college course on International Business Communication in English. The study was conducted over 18 weeks with 46 sophomore students. The approach utilized authentic business communication scenarios presented through videos, followed by roleplays simulating real-life business situations. Data were collected through student surveys, group interviews, assessments, and the instructor's observations. Results indicate that the approach provided students with practical experience in a safe and supportive environment, enabling them to develop their communication skills. The use of videos made the learning experience more engaging and enjoyable for students. The students demonstrated high levels of engagement, motivation, and participation, and showed significant improvement in their language and communication skills. However, the approach also presented some challenges. Some students found the roleplays intimidating, particularly those who were not confident in their language skills. In addition, some students faced challenges in designing and implementing effective roleplays that accurately reflected real-life business situations. Based on the results of this study, video and roleplay-based approaches are effective tools for enhancing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in business contexts. These approaches provide students with valuable opportunities to practice and develop their language and communication skills in a safe and supportive environment, while also improving their engagement, motivation, and participation in the course.
