Utilizing AI and Cutting-edge Technologies to Enhance the Learning Experiences of ESL Learners

Abstract

As English serves as the global language for communication, it is imperative for ESL/EFL students to enhance their fluency in various English skills. To empower Taiwanese EFL learners in improving their English proficiency, the Taiwanese government collaborated with National Taiwan Normal University to establish a comprehensive website for school students. With the support of TESOL experts and computer scientists, our team has integrated a diverse range of computer and AI technologies to enhance the EFL learning experience. In this presentation, my focus will be on the AI-related services offered on this website.

1. Automated Speech Recognition and Feedback: Through collaboration with NTNU's computer science department and Microsoft's pronunciation assessment technologies, our primary objective is to refine the pronunciation and communicative abilities of EFL learners.
2. AI-Driven Chatbots: These chatbots are equipped with Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Text-to-Speech (TTS), and the OpenAI ChatGPT engine, ensuring interactive and real-time practice opportunities.
3. AI-Enhanced Writing Assistants: These assistants are designed to provide immediate feedback and corrections on written submissions from EFL students, offering powerful grammar checking tools that ensure consistent improvement in writing skills.
4. AI-Infused Resources for Educators and Learners: Tailored to the unique needs of both ESL teachers and students, these resources promise comprehensive learning and teaching experiences.
5. Innovative Content Creation and Assessment Platforms: Leveraging state-of-the-art platforms such as Vyond, Pictory, and Questgen, we are capable of crafting engaging and varied learning materials and quizzes.

With this impressive collection of computer and AI-driven tools and technologies, we are poised to redefine the landscape of ESL/EFL learning.
