Crafting Golden Prompts for the Development of Writing Tools

Abstract

Over the recent months, we've been captivated by a series of newly-released AI tools which may reshape the landscape of language learning. Notably, ChatGPT engages in multi-turn dialogues with users to answer questions and respond to requests for information and assistance. Unlike earlier AI technologies, these responses are more effective, if prompts are well thought out, as highlighted by recent research in Prompt Engineering. This presentation will share insights from our experience in crafting golden prompts to leverage ChatGPT in the development of writing assistance tools. Additionally, we will showcase a prototype system designed to assist learners in improving their essay writing skills. This system offers suggestions to enhance grammaticality, logic, word choice, collocation, and organization, as well as comprehensive explanations for the suggested edits.
