Many listening lessons today still focus on how much language learners can comprehend spoken input. This is referred to as a comprehension or a text-oriented approach. In such an approach, language learners are often tested for what they can understand when listening to a passage or spoken text or viewing a video recording. This approach misses out on an opportunity to teach learners how to listen effectively and strategically, as well as exercising more control in directing their own listening improvements. In this workshop I propose a process-oriented approach to developing second language listening that is learner-centred rather than text and comprehension-focused.
